Dr. Nina Schoch, Executive Director and Director of Science and Conservation at the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC), will kick off our 2024-2025 Loon Zoom series with a presentation about her decades of experience conducting rescues and recoveries of injured or sick Adirondack loons. Responding to individual loons in distress is a major component of ACLC's conservation efforts. Gary Lee, long-time ACLC field staff members and loon naturalist, will join Dr. Schoch in the presentation to share his own experiences rescuing and recovering loons in the Adirondacks. There will be time for questions.

This paddle is sponsored by Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) and must be registered for through their site. Participants will meet at the parking area along Keeses Mill Road and travel through the St. Regis River to Lower St. Regis Lake. More instructions will be provided by email. Participate in the NY Annual Loon Census on July 20th, 2024!

The New York Annual Loon Census is held on the 3rd Saturday of July each year, from 8:00-9:00 a.m, to provide an annual "snapshot" of the breeding loon population in the state. People all across New York are invited to participate in the Annual Loon Census and submit their observations from any lake in New York. Please sign up for a lake to help minimize duplication of reports for the same lake.

Over the last two decades, Adirondack loons have experienced increasing nest failure due to climate-change-related torrential rain events. The timing of loon migration has also been affected by shorter and milder winters, resulting in a "molt-migration mismatch," and causing an increasing incidence of loons becoming "iced-in" during late winter.
