About Pete Hornbeck and Hornbeck Boats

Pete Hornbeck was a dedicated environmental advocate and an elementary school teacher by profession. He started building boats as a hobby in 1971 and eventually left teaching to devote himself full-time to his craft. For decades, he built his small Kevlar canoes, enabling thousands of people to explore Adirondack waterways, where he also greatly enjoyed paddling. Sadly, Pete unexpectedly passed away in December 2020, but his legacy of building lightweight canoes continues on, thanks to the dedicated staff of Hornbeck Boats

At Hornbeck Boats, they don't just build them, they use them. Their staff are both skilled at their trade and paddlers themselves who know what is desired from a lightweight boat. From designing the forms, to tying the boat on the customer's car, the staff's know-how has shaped every aspect of the 'Hornbeck Experience.' They only sell their boats through their shop in Olmsteadville, enabling you to have a conversation with them to make sure you get the right boat to meet your goals and needs. If shopping in person, you can also see where your boat is made and you can try a boat on the water at their on-site pond so you can see how it fits, feels, and paddles.

We are most grateful to Hornbeck Boats for all their continued support of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation!
