Seeking Career Experience in Wildlife Conservation?

Are you interested in environmental education? Wildlife research? Science communications? Public outreach? Conservation? Working outdoors?

Exciting opportunities await! Each year, interns with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation participate in our loon research and education programs across the Adirondack Park. Our interns gain valuable skills and experience in field work, outreach, environmental education, data management and the workings of a non-profit organization. While we do offer internship opportunities year-round, summer field season is our biggest season for supporting interns in field research and environmental education. Please reach out to us at any time of the year to learn how you can join our team!

The Intern experience

Professional Development: The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation offers many opportunities for personal and professional development. All interns receive training and guidance from our experienced staff.

Research: While monitoring study lakes, interns observe loons and record their productivity. Training includes instruction in loon behavior and nest identification, and guidance for recording observations. While doing fieldwork, interns primarily work independently, with guidance from our Research Biologist. Ability to proficiently paddle a canoe or kayak and to swim are required.

Education/Outreach: Our interns attend presentations and events on behalf of the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and engage with visitors at our Adirondack Loon Center in Saranac Lake. They will learn how to greet our visitors, discuss our organization’s mission, introduce them to our exhibits, and share interesting facts about loons and our work. Interns expand their educational outreach skills while working alongside our Education and Outreach Director. At the Loon Center, our interns also have the opportunity to participate in administrative tasks and collaborate with our staff.

Intern Projects: In addition to the well-rounded variety of experiences we offer all our interns, each individual will conduct a unique project during their time with with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation.

College Credit: The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation will collaborate with your college or university to ensure that your internship meets your institution’s expectations. Staff at the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation strive to provide experiential learning opportunities and support students on their path to graduation. We hope that by working with us, our interns will view themselves as future professionals in wildlife science, environmental education, or other fields related to wildlife and environmental conservation.
